History

Limgroup started out breeding asparagus, an activity that originated at Stichting Proeftuinen Noord-Limburg (Foundation for Experimental Gardens in the north of the Dutch province of Limburg) in the town of Horst-Meterik in the mid-1950s. The researchers at this experimental garden were very successful, and in 1994 it was therefore decided to establish a separate, independent company for the asparagus-breeding activities, under the name of Asparagus B.V.

This company initially focused on breeding asparagus for the climate of northwest Europe, but in the late 1990s it also launched breeding programmes for other global climate zones.

This international approach prompted the company to rename itself Limseeds B.V., as part of Limgroup. In 2009 the company decided to expand its activities and started its strawberry and mushroom breeding efforts.

In the case of all three activities, the breeding and research are intended for the global market, but the individual activities are organised in close conjunction with agricultural developments in the south-eastern part of the Netherlands, where the company is based.
